Class of 2015
My dear, bright, talented, witty, courageous, sometimes exasperating and always wonderful students -
I want to thank you for allowing me to try and teach you. I have no idea how I did, or if I taught you anything, but I hope that I at least made you think about your future and the kind of life you want. Even if you do not remember a word of Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story, or The Odyssey, I hope you remember this: I was tough on you because I believe in you and I know that you can make a difference with your life.
Lastly, I want you to know that I accepted this job because I wanted to make a difference in your lives. I wanted to instill in you the importance of education, showing you through my example how it can free you and provide you with the life that you desire. I also wanted to assist you in achieving your goals for this year and planning for the future.
A totally unexpected thing occurred, however . . . . . .
Just like little Teddy Stoddard, YOU made the difference in my life. You made me want to be the best teacher and human being possible, because I woke up every morning and realized you deserve nothing less than the best. Therefore, I strived each and every day to give you what you deserved as young people: the very best.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making me accountable, for making me better, and for making me realize my purpose on this Earth. I will live the rest of my life trying to make even half the difference in your lives that you make in mine.
Love,
Ms. Sicilia
P.S. This letter is specifically dedicated to my very first 172 students, with a special shout out to my 5th period. Without you, I would never have taken the job. :)
