FREEDOM FIGHTERS

Freedom Fighters is an after-school program that was created and designed in response to the success of the Reading Rebels 2013 summer book club. It is a program designed specifically for female high school students and their academic and personal development. By dedicating themselves to success both in and out of the classroom, the ladies of Freedom Fighters continually fight to make the best life possible so they may have the freedom to live the life they imagine.
Mission: Freedom Fighters is dedicated to empowering female high school students from underserved communities and underperforming schools through literary and cultural enrichment, academic and personal accomplishment, and character and leadership development, while preparing them to attend and graduate college.
Vision: By offering an extensive program and holistic support system that focuses on promoting the arts and building social awareness, self-confidence, inner discipline, and intrinsic motivation, Freedom Fighters aims to raise the academic achievement and personal expectations for the female high school students it serves so they may complete high school, attend and graduate college, and become contributing members to their communities.

- Attend weekly meetings and tutoring sessions
- Fulfill their individualized academic plans
- Prioritize their activities
- Develop their organizational skills
- Build upon their intrinsic motivation
- Demonstrate academic and personal growth
- Prepare to attend and graduate from college
Projected Outcomes
Students will:
- Increase or maintain their grade point average per school quarter and strive to meet or exceed a 3.0 GPA
- Participate in a minimum of two school clubs or organizations
- Attend school and weekly meetings/tutoring sessions with no unexcused absences
- Complete weekly Reflections, monthly Cultural Papers, monthly individual or group Visual/Performing Arts Project(s), and annual Testimonials
- Meet at the beginning of each semester with their academic school advisor
- Attend cultural field trips as well as field trips to local and regional universities
- Research in-state versus out-of-state universities/colleges and prepare for standardized college tests
Incentives
- End of the month educational field trips with lunches/dinners provided (parent/guardian supervision or permission slips required)
- Monthly activities/outings chosen by students
- Community projects selected by students
- Freedom Gear (t-shirts, tank tops, wristbands, etc.) based on fundraising events
Membership Requirements
- Parental/Guardian consent and support
- Students: Complete commitment to personal and academic growth
